We have now walked all the way from Prestatyn in north Wales down to Chepstow in the south and then west all the way to Cardigan. A total of 585.8 miles with 451.7 miles to get us to Chester and the end of our circumnavigation.

This year I wanted to get as far as we could and initially planned to have three long weekends and a full week which would get us to somewhere near Barmouth. This would include the walking of the whole of the Ceredigion Coast Path, 5 miles of which isn’t on the Wales Coast Path.

I had hoped to stay in Gwbert near Cardigan in April, Aberystwyth in May to complete the Ceredigion Coast Path and then in Machynlleth to get us round the Dovey river and up to Barmouth. In February we went to Aberystwyth for a few days to recce the start and end points and to check out the hotels.

We stayed at the Marine Hotel in Aberystwyth and looked at the Cliff Hotel in Gwbert, both of which were very suitable for our needs. Our problem was in Machynlleth. I was hoping to stay at the Wynnstay Hotel but it went into receivership in January. Nevertheless we had a look at the hotel and saw someone in it. It was the owner who was trying to sell the hotel. He was very obliging and made a provisional booking for us but only to the Friday as they were booked the following weekend.

In desperation we drove to Aberdovey and found nothing suitable and then on to Barmouth where we saw the Min Y Mor Hotel. They could take us for four nights in October and, if everyone else was happy with this, we could do a fourth sortie and this would get us to Penrhyndeudraeth. This would give us a clear run around the Llyn Peninsular next year.
