17-18 September 2011: Milford Haven to Marloes Sands
Milford Haven to Dale: 10.1 miles (16.3km) +223m -221m (17 September 2011)
From our hotel in Haverfordwest, the Mariners, we were taken to Tesco’s car park to start our day’s walking. This was going to be an unusual walk because we had to make two river crossings and if we didn’t beat the tide, it would be a long detour up and down the river to the first bridge.
We left Milford Haven behind us and passed yet more oil and gas terminals before we came to the first crossing of the day at Sandy Haven. When we arrived the tide was almost at its lowest, so we had lunch before crossing. Fortunately stones had been laid across the one deep part of the river. Once we were safely across there was another 2 hours of walking until we came to the second crossing. Knowing that the tide was on the turn, we kept a good pace. Luckily for us the tide was still low enough to cross.
It was then a short walk to Dale where the bus was waiting to take us back to the hotel.
Dale to Marloes Sands: 8.3 miles (13.3km) +378m -354m (18 September 2011)
On Sunday we had a shorter walk without the stress of beating the tides. We left Dale and headed south to St Anne’s Head where we headed north. After about 4 hours walking we looked left and saw Dale less than a mile away!
The day’s walk continued around a disused airfield and across the cliffs over Marloes Sands. When we got to the end we found that they were preparing to shoot some scenes for a film, Snow White and the Huntsman, not a film that won any Oscars!
Total for the weekend: 18.4 miles
Total around Wales: 218.0 miles
