16 December 2012: Redwick to Newport Wetlands
Redwick to Newport Wetlands: 7.7 miles (12.4km) +29m -26m (16 December 2012)
On this bright and sunny December Sunday we met up in the car park at Newport Wetlands, an RSPB reserve. The coach arrived and the driver asked me how do I get to Redwick. In my car that is easy but I didn’t want to take responsibility for a 55 seater coach along the narrow roads on the levels. After a long detour into Newport, along the M4 and Magor we finally arrived at Redwick. What should have been a 20 minutes drive took 45 minutes. So at least we got value for money!
Slightly later than I had envisaged we walked down to the sea wall to pick up the path. The walk continued along the sea wall until we got to Goldcliff where we had to turn inland to get around the protected wildlife areas. Eventually we returned to the sea wall and this took us into the wetlands area.
When we got to the Usk West Lighthouse we had an option of either continuing along the Wales Coast Path in a loop under all the high tension electricity cables or walk straight back to the RSPB cafe. Most of us took the second option where we sat out in the December sun drinking hot chocolate.
Total Walked: 7.7 miles
Total around Wales: 276.2
